Application Scope of Coal Tar Pitch
(1) As an Electrode Binder
The coal tar pitch used as an electrode binder is typically medium-temperature pitch. During electrode molding, it transforms decomposed carbonaceous raw materials into a plastic paste, which is then pressed into various engineered structural materials. During the baking process, the pitch undergoes coking, binding the originally dispersed carbonaceous materials into a cohesive carbon mass with the required structural strength.
(2) As a Briquette Binder
Medium-temperature pitch diluted with 20%–30% high-boiling-point fractions of coal tar can be used as a binder for briquettes. The resulting soft pitch effectively binds the materials together.
(3) Production of Pitch Coke
Pitch coke is primarily used in the preparation of cathodes for electrolytic aluminum production and graphite electrodes for steelmaking.
(4) Manufacturing of Asphalt Varnish
Asphalt varnish is a solution of coal tar pitch. To enhance its gloss, additional rosin or turpentine oil is added during the boiling process, along with fillers to improve plasticity. This type of asphalt varnish is suitable for use as a waterproofing and protective coating for outdoor steel structures, concrete, and masonry. It can be applied by brushing or spraying at normal outdoor temperatures.
(5) Other Applications
Coal tar pitch can also be used to improve plasticity, produce pitch-based carbon fibers, pave roads, manufacture waterproofing agents, carbon black, and more
